This banana, blueberry, oat and almond smoothie is my favourite breakfast at the moment.
I love smoothies. They’re such a great way to start your day. Filling, satisfying and energising, not to mention delicious! They’re so wonderfully easy too, you simply throw everything together in the blender and two minutes later you have the healthiest on-the-go breakfast! They’re very little washing up too, so there is really no excuse not to make one… I promise it will do wonders for your body, nurturing it a trillion times more than cereal or toast ever could, while tasting better too. It’s really a win-win breakfast!
Of course all smoothies have elements of goodness as they contain fresh fruit, however, I like to make mine a super smoothie by adding gluten free oats, chia seeds, flax seeds and almond butter. These ingredients give you an awesome amount of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, fibre and B vitamins, all of which are so important for the healthy functioning of your body. They’ll keep you full too, meaning you won’t be tempted to snack – chia seeds, for example, expand by up to twelve times when eaten, which means they really do fight hunger!
Instead of sugar, honey or sweetener I use two medjool dates, which not only add a delicious rich taste, but they also keep the ingredient list so perfectly natural and fresh. Nothing at all processed here! Of course you’ll get lots of goodness too from the blueberries and banana. Did you know blueberries are one of the best foods to eat for good skin? They’re considered to contain the highest number of anti-oxidants, which neutralise free radicals in your body and so stop damage to your skin. It’s pretty cool.
You might notice that I haven’t used any almond milk, but water instead – this is simply because I haven’t had time to make any fresh milk recently and I don’t love store brought ones, as I find them pretty processed, they contain weird, unnecessary ingredients most of the time. I find that using water makes no difference to the creaminess though as the almond butter, dates and banana ensure a perfect smoothie texture - honestly it tastes no different! Of course if you prefer you can switch water for non-dairy milk though.
Makes one glass:
- 1 ripe banana
- 1/2 a cup of blueberries
- 1/2 a cup of ice cold water
- 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon of flax seeds
- 1 tablespoon of oats
- 1 tablespoon of almond butter
- 2 medjool dates
Simply pit the dates then place all of the ingredients together in the blender and blend until smooth, this should just take a minute or two.
If you like it a little runnier, add some extra water at the end.
Sip and enjoy!
