Cleansing Carrot, Orange, Kale, Lemon & Ginger Juice

Cleansing Carrot, Orange, Kale, Lemon & Ginger Juice

You know sometimes you wake up in the morning and you just feel so tired and rundown, maybe a little hungover, flu like or overly full from the night before? This juice is your cure for that feeling! Trust me it really works. The combination of lemon and ginger gives each sip an awesomely tangy kick, while the kale adds a nicely savoury touch that stops the carrot and orange from becoming overly sweet. Don’t worry it’s still delicious though as their sweetness is not totally destroyed by the tanginess or the veggies! I’m not a huge fan of pure veggie juice, it’s too bitter for me, especially first thing in the morning so I always keep a little fruit for sweetness. The whole thing is just so incredibly refreshing, and you really do feel reenergised after each sip, which is pretty awesome – it really feels like drinking liquid health! Although, it isn’t the most beautiful colour – sadly it comes out a slightly murky brown, which is why there aren’t more picture of the juice! It tastes way better than it looks!

Kale is really one of the most incredible foods in the world! It’s full of fibre and sulphur which, with the help of the lemon, will detox your liver, while it’s awesome doses of vitamins A & C in both the kale and the oranges will boost your immune system, fighting of any signs of cold. Did you know kale also has more iron than beef and contains anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids? It’s just a powerhouse of goodness! The ginger will also help reset your digestive system. So drink up – it’ll make you look and feel amazing!

Makes one large glass:

– 2 oranges

– 4 carrots

– 2 big handfuls of kale

– 1/2 a lemon

– a knob of ginger about an inch long

Optional: one cucumber

Start by slicing the oranges in half, then cut off their skin – both the orange and the inner white layers.

Then put everything through the juicer – you’ll get more goodness from the kale if you juice it at the same time as the oranges or carrots as they’re so juicy!

Sip, cleanse and enjoy!

does this drink need to be juiced? or can it just be blended

    • http://ellawoodward.wordpress.com Ella Woodward

I juice it, but I haven’t tried it blended – it might be delicious! Only thing is I’m not sure how easy it is to blend carrots? Let me know how you get on if you try, I’d love to know! :)

Hi Ella, love your recipes, especially your super bread! You can make a smoothie in the Vitamix blender. Blends carrots, beetroots and everything else beautifully!

I’m so pleased to hear and yes – I love my Vitamix!

Have been curious about this for a while but since the post mentioned hungover I thought I’d ask, how do you handle alcohol in this lifestyle? Obviously beer is out but the rest- wine and hard alcohol?

    Thank you!

    • ellawoodward

Hi Caroline. I don’t really ever drink, only once or twice a year probably but when I do I just drink ice cold (good quality) vodka with fresh lemon juice as that’s the purest form of alcohol. Hope that helps!

Hi Ella, I was wondering if you could recommend a good juicer that doesn’t cost the earth? I would love to start making some of your juices. Thanks :) Katie x

HI Ella, Do you think I could make this the night before and then drink in the morning? Might have to stir it a little but do you think it would be okay? Thanks!

    • ellawoodward

If you can make it fresh it would definitely be best but if you can’t then just make sure you put it in an airtight bottle and it should be ok!

    Hi Ella,

I just say your book come up in my recommendations on Amazon, I see its available for pre order due to be released in Jan 2015!! Congratulations, that is awesome! Look forward to purchasing it :)

    Hi Ella,

Just found your website and can’t wait to start trying your recipes!

I was just wondering what the consistency of your juices are (I have never juiced before). I’m a little fussy and don’t like the consistency of smoothies as they are quite thick! I’d be really keen to try some of the juice recipes (because they are so good for you).

    Thank you,

    Erin xxx

      Hi Erin,
Juices are much less thick than smoothies so hopefully you like them better and you can always add more water!

Hi Ella, I have just got a sage nutri juicer and tried making this recipe. I managed to juice everything but the kale, it didnt work and went straight into the pulp bin. How do you manage to juice your kale, I would really appreciated some tips! I used a bag of curly kale, did you use large kale leaves, I’m wondering if this makes any difference. Hope you can help would really appreciate a reply thanks :) xxx

  • ellawoodward

I actually tend to do kale in the blender as it doesn’t yield much juice so I find it is best in smoothies. xx

I’m making my grocery list. This combo has to be very tastey! I’ll be unpacking my juicer today! (Just moved.)

I absolutely adore this juice. You can feel the goodness as you drink it. Love it!

Hi Ella, just wondering if your juices can be made the night before and kept in the fridge or are they better to drink straight away? Thanks Charlene x

    • ellawoodward

Hi Charlene, it’s best to make a juice fresh and then drink it straightaway. However you can always make it the night before and store it in an airtight bottle with a rubber seal and then have it the next day! X

Juice recipes like this are delicious and very good for us but please stop saying things like “detox your liver.” There is no such thing.

  • ellawoodward

So sorry to hear this, make sure you remove all the white skin from the orange. I use a Vitamix blender which is amazing! You can read more about my blender recommendations here – http://deliciouslyella.com/kitchen-equipment-choosing-a-blender/

    Hi Ella,

Thank you for all of your wonderful recipes! I have just discovered your site not too long ago and have been using it almost daily every since!! I was just wondering, what kind of juicer do you use? I am from the US but I am currently living in Paris and I am not at all familiar with the European brands.

    Thank you!
